How Much Local History Do You Know?

Do you know how intimately our city’s history is intertwined with both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War? On the eve of the American Revolution, Thomas Jefferson found respite in Hanover at the Sign of the Horse inn, owned by Caspar Reinecker. Jefferson’s overnight stay on April 12, 1776, while en route to Philadelphia from Monticello, cost him 11 shillings and 6 pence.

Hanover’s strategic location at the intersection of major roads from Baltimore to the north and from Philadelphia to the Valley of Virginia made it a vital crossroads during this period. Jefferson’s return on September 5, after attending the first meeting of the Continental Congress, further cemented Hanover’s role in early American history.

During the Revolutionary War, Hanover, with a modest 500 log homes, played a supportive role in the larger conflict. In 1814, as the War of 1812 saw British forces advancing on Baltimore, Hanover contributed two companies of infantry. These troops, led by Captains Frederick Metzgar and John Bair, marched to Baltimore, participating in critical engagements against the British at North Point on September 12, 1814, before returning home after two weeks.

The town’s growth accelerated with the advent of the railroad in the mid-19th century. The establishment of the Hanover Branch Railroad to Hanover Junction in 1852, followed by connections to Gettysburg in 1858 and York in 1876, spurred economic development and increased connectivity.

Hanover’s involvement in the Civil War came to the forefront on June 30, 1863, during the Battle of Hanover. This confrontation saw Union cavalry under Judson Kilpatrick clashing with Confederate forces led by J.E.B. Stuart. The engagement, which unfolded in the town and the surrounding farmland, particularly along Frederick Street, was the last skirmish before the Battle of Gettysburg. This battle not only delayed Confederate forces but also underscored Hanover’s strategic significance during one of the most crucial moments of the Civil War.

Throughout these periods, Hanover has been a hub for various industries, including the manufacture of cigars, gloves, silk, and more, contributing to the local economy and community identity. The town has also made cultural contributions, such as launching its first newspaper, “Die Pennsylvania Wochenschrift,” in 1797, and establishing a lasting legacy with brands of canned vegetables and a mail-order gift company.

These historical narratives underscore Hanover’s enduring importance and its role in shaping both local and national history, from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and beyond.
